IRS staff cuts are setting up next year's tax season for trouble

The IRS just lost 26% of its workforce in one year, dropping from 102,000 employees to fewer than 76,000.

This happened during what officials called "one of the most successful filing seasons in recent memory."

But the cuts are creating serious problems.

Identity theft victims now wait an average of 20 months to get their cases resolved, with 387,000 cases currently backlogged.

IT staffing was cut by 27% and taxpayer services by 22%.

The IRS still manually transcribes paper returns digit by digit because their technology is so outdated.

National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins warns these cuts could make next year's filing season much worse, especially with major tax law changes coming.
